For my Artist’s Date today I went to see the stunning hoodie murals in Edinburgh (proper name: Our Nation’s Sons) by Joe Caslin. I’d been keeping an eye out for them, but I don’t generally have a reason to go down the Cowgate.
The Cowgate is a kind of sunken street – it’s where the back of everything is, under the top-level city. It’s always a bit dark and dank, full of smoker’s exits and occasional bars. It’s fabulous to see this art there. It’s starting to wear slightly, with one piece graffitied, but it’s so striking.
I love the way the faces of the sitters look at you – direct but so calm. Beautiful.
